The original 9 hole course opened in 1900 was designed by Tom Morris of Hoylake in, the course was extended to 18 holes in1909 when the course Architect was 5 times British Open Champion James Braid. The President of the Board of Trade David Lloyd George officially opened the extended course on the 1st of June 1909. The course measured 4490yds long with a par (bogey in those days of 74.

In the first few years the club employed a professional golfer / grounds man, and labourers to carry out the work on the course. In 1906 the club advertised for a full time professional, and Jack Bowman, who apprenticed to the famous golfer Harry Vardon was appointed, and he remained with the club for 50 years. Jack Bowman was followed by Mr. R. F. (Dick) White who was employed by the club from 1957 to 1969. In 1970 Douglas Verity, son of the famous cricketer Hedley Verity became the professional at the club and remained in office until 1998, when John Pilkington became Professional, followed by his son Stuart , who is our current professional.

In 1921 /22 the club leased additional land off the Andrew’s family extending the course to 5500 yards. In 1935 a field near Cae Plan became available making it possible to re –plan the old 9th hole and extend the 10th viz. the Dogleg (15th now). In 1963 the present numbering of the holes was adopted. In 1972 changes were made with a new 3rd and 4th hole, an extended 5th hole, three years later alterations were made to the 12th 13th and 14th holes, which lengthened the course now 5705yds (sss67).
